I have a question about hardware cloth. I have a mobile hoop coop. My 6 chicks and 6 guineas are 6 weeks old. Our plan is to have a safe "docking station" for the coop for nighttime. It will be out during the day and back to docking station at night. During the winter, we plan to leave it stationary and fill with deep litter. So my question is, could we use hardware cloth on the complete bottom of the docking station since they will only be there mostly overnight and in the winter, the litter would be on top of it? Not sure if even that amount of exposure to the hardware cloth would be a problem for their feet.

This is a needed video. Im just now seeing it but ordered your book earlier this a.m. my chickens are under our deck porch for shade and I put a blanket on the porch so the sun won't go through the boards. I love the idea of frozen water bottles😊 Thank you so much❤

We attempted to free range here in rural Arkansas, but after 3 years, have come to the conclusion that it just doesnt work here. Stray dogs, eagles, coyotes, mystery predators have taken its toll and having to start over and over again is expensive. Electric netting keeps predators out but birds continually look to get out to that greener pasture on the other side. We have dogs now to do the job but have learned that until they reach an age of 2 years, consider chickens as toys. I will just continue to expand my enclosed runs and not be so stressed out over this issue anymore.

Mice and rats? that is what outdoor hunting type cats are for. (of course you have to keep the baby chicks from them, until they are grown. (unless they are with their momma and other adult hens. cats want nothing to do with a big flapping, squalkng chicken running at them).

I'm very curious how you would introduce just the one little girl to the rest if your crew? I get nervous combining flocks with multiples. I'd love your thoughts on this. I have one that was out with a medical issue for months and now she has her own area next to the main flock because she and the other girl wanted to destroy each other. There was no going back together. We have 3layers of fence between them actually. However the advice I'm asking is for in the future not that scenario

We get the most beautiful yolks when feeding our chickens kitchen scraps from our garden. They look forward to it. They're smart too. They don't eat what isn't good for them. Oh, and they also love meat scraps, cracklins in the winter, and all the bugs they can eat from the yard! They also get layer feed and we grow a chicken garden just for them.

Love watching your videos. I started raising chickens in the 70's as a young boy, Bred and showed leghorn bantams.Still have 10 hens . I always spoiled them as to me they are part of the family.

I need to add something to this. About backyard chickens in neighborhoods and it. It being allowed. You always have to keep in mind your neighbors that live close. If you want them to accept backyard chickens, you have to be diligent about cleanliness and aesthetics. Don’t throw to together a bunch of pallets and tarps and call it a coop when you live in a neighborhood that does not appreciate the property near them looking like a junk yard. That is fine if the neighborhood, as whole is lax on aesthetics. But not if you live amongst people that like things neat and tidy. Offering eggs to your neighbors doesn’t hurt either.😊 We used to trip ride our horses. The rule of trail riding horses on property that is not our own is to leave nothing behind but hoof prints, (well and a little manure that will be broke down to dirt in no time). We wanted the property owners to not even notice we had passed through. Always keep your neighbors in mind and even invite them over to see your chickens and how you care for them. Especially the children. If you include them, you are less likely to have problems with them either. 😊

We move our run and till. I’ve tried reseeding the grass and gave up. Now I just plant a chicken garden and let them wander around in it for a bit every other day. I do let a small area grow tall weeds so they can wander in that area too. We call the weed pad Jurassic park. It’s fin to watch the weeds moving as they pass through. The fins lotsof bugs, lots of happy chicken noises. 💕💕

I'm having an issue with one of my birds. Every time I go into their roaming area she will come after me and peck me. I've tried holding her down but nothing seems to help. Any advice?
